Converting a Word document to PDF is the standard way to finalize and share documents in a format that looks identical on every device, cannot be accidentally edited, and is accepted by virtually every submission system in the world. Job applications, academic submissions, legal filings, business proposals, financial reports, and official correspondence all typically need to be in PDF format. While Microsoft Word itself has a built-in 'Save as PDF' feature, many users prefer a web-based conversion tool that requires no desktop software, works from any device including those where Word is not installed, and produces clean standards-compliant PDF output. LazyPDF's Word to PDF converter uses LibreOffice, one of the most capable and widely deployed open-source document processing engines available, to render your .doc or .docx file with full fidelity: fonts, tables, headers, footers, images, numbered lists, footnotes, text styles, and page layout are all rendered accurately. The output PDF is a universally compatible document that can be opened on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, or any device with a PDF viewer. Conversion is fast — most documents complete in a few seconds — and files are processed over an encrypted HTTPS connection and deleted immediately after the PDF is returned to your browser. No account is required and there are no file size restrictions.
How It Works
Word to PDF converts your .doc or .docx file into a PDF document using LibreOffice's rendering engine. LibreOffice opens your Word file, renders it with full formatting support, and exports it as a standards-compliant PDF. Your file is processed on our secure server and deleted immediately afterward.
Key Features
Faithful Rendering
LibreOffice handles fonts, styles, tables, headers, footers, and images to produce a PDF that closely matches your original Word layout.
Both Formats
Supports both the modern .docx format and the legacy .doc format, covering documents created in any version of Microsoft Word.
Fast Conversion
Most Word documents are converted to PDF in just a few seconds, even those with complex formatting and embedded images.
Universal Output
The resulting PDF can be opened on any device without needing Word or any specific software — every modern device has a PDF reader.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
In most cases, yes. LibreOffice has excellent compatibility with Word formats and handles standard formatting, tables, and images well. Minor differences may appear with highly custom fonts that are not available on the server, or with advanced Word-specific features like certain SmartArt graphics.
What Word file formats are supported?
The tool accepts both .docx (the modern Word format introduced in 2007) and .doc (the legacy binary format). Both are processed by LibreOffice and converted to standard PDF output.
Can I convert multiple Word files to PDF at once?
Currently the tool processes one file at a time. For batch conversion, convert each file individually. Each conversion takes only a few seconds, so processing multiple documents is still quick.
Does the converted PDF preserve hyperlinks?
Yes. Hyperlinks in your Word document are preserved as clickable links in the resulting PDF. Internal document links (such as linked table of contents entries) and external web links are both carried over to the PDF output.
Can I convert a Word document with tracked changes to PDF?
The PDF output shows the document as rendered, not the tracked changes markup. If tracked changes are visible in your document (shown as red strikethroughs or insertions), those will appear in the PDF. To get a clean PDF showing only the accepted text, accept or reject all changes in Word before converting.
Will headers, footers, and page numbers appear in the PDF?
Yes. LibreOffice renders all Word document elements including headers, footers, page numbers, section breaks, and watermarks. The PDF output reflects the complete layout of your Word document as it would appear when printed.
What if my Word document uses custom fonts?
If the document uses fonts that are not available on our server's system, LibreOffice will substitute the closest available font. The text content and layout will be correct, but the typeface may differ slightly if highly specialized fonts are used. Standard fonts like Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, and Helvetica are available.
