PDF to Word

Convert PDF to editable Word document

The need to convert a PDF back into an editable Word document arises constantly in professional environments. A contract received as a PDF needs to be modified and re-sent. A proposal template sent as PDF needs to be adapted for a new client. A report published in PDF format needs to be updated with new figures. An official form needs to be filled in and the content repurposed. In all of these cases, manually retyping the content from a PDF into Word would be enormously time-consuming, especially for documents spanning many pages. LazyPDF's PDF to Word tool uses LibreOffice, a powerful and mature open-source office suite used by millions of organizations worldwide, to intelligently analyze the PDF layout and reconstruct it as an editable .docx file. The engine reads text content, identifies paragraph and heading structures, detects table layouts, and positions embedded images in the Word document as close to the original as possible. The output .docx format is compatible with every version of Microsoft Word from 2007 onward, as well as Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, and Apple Pages. For most standard documents — reports, letters, proposals, forms, and articles — the conversion quality is excellent and requires minimal cleanup. The file is processed securely on our server over HTTPS and deleted immediately after the converted document is returned to your browser. No account or registration is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Word document look exactly like the original PDF?

The conversion preserves text content, basic formatting, and images well. However, complex layouts with multiple columns, custom fonts, or intricate positioning may not convert perfectly. PDF and Word use fundamentally different layout models, so some adjustments may be needed.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to an editable Word document?

Scanned PDFs contain images of text, not actual text data. The conversion tool will place the scanned images into the Word document but they will not be editable. For scanned documents, first use the OCR tool to extract the text, then paste it into a Word document.

What version of Word format is used?

The output is in .docx format (Office Open XML), which is compatible with Microsoft Word 2007 and later, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, and virtually all modern word processors.

Does the conversion preserve tables from the PDF?

Yes. LibreOffice detects tabular structures in the PDF and attempts to reconstruct them as Word tables. Simple tables with clear column and row boundaries convert well. Complex tables with merged cells or unconventional formatting may require manual cleanup after conversion.

How large a PDF can I convert to Word?

There is no enforced size limit. Documents of 50–100 pages convert quickly. Very large documents with hundreds of pages or heavy image content may take longer to process but are still handled correctly. The server has sufficient resources to process typical business documents without issue.

Will fonts be preserved in the Word document?

Text content is preserved, but font appearance depends on whether the same fonts are available on your system. If the PDF uses custom or embedded fonts not installed on your computer, Word will substitute a similar font. The text itself will be correct, but the visual style may differ slightly.

Can I convert a PDF with multiple columns to Word?

Multi-column layouts are challenging for any PDF-to-Word converter because PDF uses absolute positioning while Word uses flowing text. LibreOffice does its best to reconstruct columns, but the result may require some manual formatting work. For highly complex multi-column layouts, the text content will be correct even if the column structure needs adjustment.
