Adding a watermark to a PDF document is a fundamental way to communicate its status, ownership, or confidentiality at a glance. Lawyers stamp drafts with 'DRAFT' before finalizing contracts. Photographers and designers add copyright notices to proof documents shared with clients. Companies mark internal reports 'CONFIDENTIAL' before distributing them to external parties. Governments and regulatory bodies add classification markings to official documents. LazyPDF's Watermark PDF tool lets you add custom text to every page of your document with full control over the text content, size, opacity, and position. You choose exactly what the watermark says — whether that is your company name, a copyright statement, a date, a draft label, or any other text relevant to your use case. The opacity control lets you make the watermark subtle enough that it does not obscure the underlying content while still being clearly visible, or fully opaque if you need a bold, unmissable marking. Positioning options cover center, corners, and top or bottom edges to accommodate any document layout. The watermark is drawn directly into each page's content layer using pdf-lib, running entirely in your browser without any server upload. This means even the most sensitive documents never leave your device. The resulting PDF works in all PDF readers and the watermark appears correctly whether the file is viewed on screen, printed, or archived.
How It Works
Watermark PDF overlays custom text on every page of your document by drawing it directly into each page's content stream. Using pdf-lib in your browser, the tool calculates the text position based on your chosen placement option — center, corner, or edge — then writes the text as a PDF graphics operator at your specified font size and opacity level. The text is rendered as actual vector text within the page's content layer, not as a floating annotation or separate overlay. This means the watermark is embedded into the page itself and will appear correctly in every PDF viewer, in print, and in any PDF processing workflow downstream. The entire operation completes locally in your browser without any server upload.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the watermark be removed by others?
The text watermark is drawn directly onto the page content layer. While a technically skilled user with professional PDF editing software could attempt to remove it, the watermark is embedded in the page content — not a separate toggleable layer — making removal non-trivial.
Will the watermark appear when I print the PDF?
Yes. The watermark is part of the page content, so it appears in print exactly as it does on screen. This makes it suitable for marking physical drafts, confidential printed copies, and proof documents.
Can I add an image watermark instead of text?
Currently the tool supports text watermarks only. For image-based watermarks such as a company logo, a desktop PDF editor would be needed. Text watermarks cover the most common use cases: draft labels, confidentiality notices, copyright marks, and date stamps.
Can I add a diagonal watermark?
The current positioning options include center, corners, and top/bottom edges. A true diagonally rotated watermark is not yet available. For the most prominent visual effect, the center position with a large font size and moderate opacity (0.3–0.5) is the most widely used combination.
Will the watermark affect the file size?
Adding a text watermark increases file size very slightly — typically by just a few kilobytes — because a small text content stream is added to each page. For a 50-page document this might add 10–20 KB total, which is negligible and will not cause email attachment issues.
Can I add different watermarks to different pages?
The current tool applies the same watermark to all pages simultaneously. For different watermarks on different pages, split the document into sections, apply distinct watermarks to each section separately, then merge the watermarked sections back together.
Does the watermark work on scanned PDFs that are image-based?
Yes. The watermark text is added as a new content layer over each page, regardless of whether the page is a scanned image or vector text. The text draws over the existing page content and appears correctly over scanned documents.
What opacity setting works best for a watermark?
For standard 'DRAFT' or 'CONFIDENTIAL' marking, an opacity of 0.3–0.4 is typically ideal — visible enough to communicate the status clearly without obscuring the document content. For copyright notices in the corners, lower opacity around 0.2 is common.
Can I watermark a PDF on a mobile device?
Yes. The watermark tool runs in any modern mobile browser. You can upload a PDF from your phone, enter your watermark text, set your preferences, and download the watermarked file directly to your device without installing any app.
Does watermarking work on password-protected PDFs?
No. Password-protected PDFs cannot be modified without first removing the protection. Use the Unlock PDF tool to remove the password first, then apply the watermark to the unlocked file.
