Adding a watermark to a PDF document is a fundamental way to communicate its status, ownership, or confidentiality at a glance. Lawyers stamp drafts with 'DRAFT' before finalizing contracts. Photographers and designers add copyright notices to proof documents shared with clients. Companies mark internal reports 'CONFIDENTIAL' before distributing them to external parties. Governments and regulatory bodies add classification markings to official documents. LazyPDF's Watermark PDF tool lets you add custom text to every page of your document with full control over the text content, size, opacity, and position. You choose exactly what the watermark says — whether that is your company name, a copyright statement, a date, a draft label, or any other text relevant to your use case. The opacity control lets you make the watermark subtle enough that it does not obscure the underlying content while still being clearly visible, or fully opaque if you need a bold, unmissable marking. Positioning options cover center, corners, and top or bottom edges to accommodate any document layout. The watermark is drawn directly into each page's content layer using pdf-lib, running entirely in your browser without any server upload. This means even the most sensitive documents never leave your device. The resulting PDF works in all PDF readers and the watermark appears correctly whether the file is viewed on screen, printed, or archived.
How It Works
Watermark PDF overlays custom text on every page of your document. The tool draws semi-transparent text directly onto each page's content layer at your chosen position, size, and opacity. All processing happens in your browser using pdf-lib — no files are uploaded anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the watermark be removed by others?
The text watermark is drawn directly onto the page content layer. While technically a skilled user with PDF editing software could attempt to remove it, it is embedded in the page — not a separate layer that can be simply toggled off.
Will the watermark appear when I print the PDF?
Yes. The watermark is part of the page content, so it appears in print exactly as it does on screen. This makes it suitable for marking printed drafts or confidential documents.
Can I add an image watermark instead of text?
Currently the tool supports text watermarks only. For image-based watermarks such as a company logo, you would need to use a desktop PDF editor. Text watermarks cover the most common use cases like draft labels, confidentiality notices, and copyright marks.
Can I add a diagonal watermark?
The current positioning options include center, corners, and top or bottom edges. A true diagonal rotated watermark is not available yet. For the most prominent watermark effect, the center position with a large font size and medium opacity is the most commonly used combination.
Will the watermark affect the file size?
Adding a text watermark increases the file size very slightly, typically by a few kilobytes, because the tool adds a small text content stream to each page. This is negligible for any practical purpose and will not cause email attachment issues.
Can I add different watermarks to different pages?
The current tool applies the same watermark text and style to all pages simultaneously. If you need different watermarks on different pages, you can split the document into sections, apply watermarks separately, and then merge the watermarked sections back together.
Does the watermark work on scanned PDFs that are images?
Yes. The watermark is added as a text layer on top of each page, regardless of whether the page content is a scanned image or text-based content. The text is drawn over the existing page content, so it will appear over scanned images as well.
